Background of the Study

Heart failure is a complex and chronic condition that places a significant burden on healthcare systems worldwide. In Nigeria, heart failure contributes to a high rate of hospital admissions and mortality, especially in the northern regions, including Zamfara State (Dangiwa et al., 2024). Effective management of heart failure involves a multifaceted approach, including medication, lifestyle modifications, and consistent monitoring of symptoms. Among the most critical elements in managing heart failure is patient self-care, which encompasses lifestyle changes such as dietary modifications, weight monitoring, medication adherence, and physical activity (Ibrahim et al., 2023).

Nurses play a central role in educating patients with heart failure about self-care management, as they are often the healthcare providers who spend the most time with patients and their families (Olanrewaju et al., 2023). Patient education, particularly on self-care strategies, is essential to prevent exacerbations of heart failure and improve long-term outcomes. However, studies have shown that patients in rural settings, such as Zamfara State, may not receive adequate self-care education due to limited resources, a lack of trained staff, and cultural barriers (Olowookere et al., 2024). This study seeks to explore the role of nurses in educating heart failure patients on self-care management and the challenges they face in delivering such education at Zamfara State General Hospital.

Statement of the Problem

Heart failure continues to be a major health concern in Zamfara State, and despite the established benefits of patient education for self-care, there are limited studies on how nurses in the state educate heart failure patients. Many patients remain unaware of the importance of self-care in managing their condition, leading to hospital readmissions and poor health outcomes (Salami et al., 2024). This study aims to investigate the extent of nurses’ involvement in educating heart failure patients on self-care strategies and the challenges they face in promoting such education in Zamfara State General Hospital.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of nurses in educating heart failure patients on self-care management at Zamfara State General Hospital.
  2. To identify the challenges faced by nurses in providing self-care education to heart failure patients.
  3. To evaluate the impact of nurses' education on the self-care practices and health outcomes of heart failure patients.

Research Questions

  1. What role do nurses play in educating heart failure patients on self-care management in Zamfara State General Hospital?
  2. What challenges do nurses face in providing education on self-care management for heart failure patients?
  3. How does nurse-led education influence the self-care practices and health outcomes of heart failure patients?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses who provide more comprehensive education on self-care management will see improved health outcomes in heart failure patients.
  2. A significant relationship exists between the level of self-care education provided by nurses and the frequency of hospital readmissions among heart failure patients.
  3. Nurses face significant challenges in delivering effective education on heart failure self-care due to limited resources and lack of training.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses working in Zamfara State General Hospital and their role in educating heart failure patients on self-care management. It will examine the challenges nurses face and assess the impact of their education on patient outcomes. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported educational practices and the variability in the patient’s ability to implement the recommended self-care strategies due to personal or environmental factors.

Definitions of Terms

  • Heart Failure Self-Care Management: The actions and decisions taken by patients to manage their heart failure condition, including medication adherence, weight monitoring, and lifestyle changes.
  • Nurse-Led Education: The process by which nurses provide information and support to patients to help them manage their health conditions independently.
